Chemical Peels

Superficial chemical peels can address a variety of skin concerns. They can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, help clear acne and minimize acne scarring, and improve the appearance of rough skin texture. Chemical peels can even help to lighten the effects of sun damage, by fading pigmentation and melasma. Chemical peels are a popular add-on treatment for microdermabrasion since they can help improve skin texture and tone while unveiling clearer, more radiant, and younger-looking skin.

The experienced estheticians at VIDA have performed hundreds of chemical peels on happy clients. Every esthetician on our team is extensively trained in physician-grade superficial peels, and this level of expertise drastically reduces any risk of complications. VIDA offers a variety of peels for every type of skin, and our estheticians carefully control the layers and depths of each peel to ensure the treatment is personalized just for you. During your complimentary consultation, we’ll work with you to choose the best chemical peel for your goals.

Chemical peels can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including aging skin, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, sun-damaged skin, and wrinkles.

Superficial Chemical Peels

Superficial peels, or light peels, include the PCA peel and SkinMedica’s Vitalize and Rejuvenize peels. You can also combine microdermabrasion or dermaplaning with a superficial chemical peel for an enhanced result. Both microdermabrasion and dermaplaning are excellent immediate precursors to a superficial chemical peel, because they remove the outermost dead skin on the surface, enabling a deeper penetration of the superficial chemical peel.

PCA Peel

At VIDA, we are proud to offer you the PCA Peel, which helps improve and clear your skin. PCA Peels are safe for all types of skin, but our estheticians will help you choose the best chemical peel for your skin and goals. PCA Peels are a great way to improve skin cell turnover while maximizing the skin’s function via a gentle exfoliation of old skin cells. You’ll find fresh cells revealed a few days after the treatment. Regular PCA Peels help to brighten the skin, improve skin texture, minimize discoloration, clear up acne, and reduce signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles.

Microderm-Peel

Microderm-Peels are comprised of microdermabrasion followed by a superficial chemical peel. At VIDA, we use the DiamondTone diamond-tip device for microdermabrasion treatments, which is a gentle way to remove damaged, dead cells from the surface of the skin. Next, a light chemical peel is applied now that the microdermabrasion has allowed for deeper penetration.

Rejuvenize SkinMedica

SkinMedica’s Rejuvenize Peel takes their popular Vitalize Peel to the next level. This superficial chemical peel helps skin look more vibrant and radiant, with virtually no downtime. It’s the perfect solution for mild skin issues, and you’ll notice results after just one treatment. If you’re simply looking for a fast and effective method for looking younger, with smoother, clearer skin, Rejuvenize chemical peels might be for you. It can be applied on any skin type or texture and does an excellent job of treating some of the most common and frustrating issues, such as hyperpigmentation and lines.

Dermaplaning Peel

A dermaplaning-peel starts with a dermaplaning treatment, which removes vellus hair or “peach fuzz” from the face. Don’t worry—the fuzz won’t grow back fuller or thicker. It’s a different type of hair than other hair on your body and can get in the way of topical treatments like chemical peels. Dermaplaning also exfoliates the skin at the same time, and opting for it before a superficial chemical peel helps the peel better penetrate the skin for optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many peels will I need?2020-02-09T08:40:45-08:00

In most cases, medium-depth chemical peels are only recommended once or twice per year. Superficial chemical peels can take place every month during the initial series, followed by maintenance chemical peels every few months. Recommended skin care products can help maintain results.

Who’s a good candidate for a chemical peel?2020-02-09T08:40:00-08:00

The best candidates for a superficial or medium-depth chemical peel are those with fairer skin and light-colored hair. However, chemical peels can also be safely performed on those with darker skin—although there is an increased risk of pigmentation.

How long does a chemical peel take?2020-02-09T08:41:21-08:00

Your entire appointment takes about one hour, whether you get a superficial chemical peel or medium-depth chemical peel.

Medium to Medium-Deep Chemical Peels

We offer two types of medium and medium-deep chemical peels, including TCA for wrinkles and Jessner/Cosmelan to minimize pigmentation. These chemical peels are only performed by select providers at VIDA Aesthetic Medicine who have received the highest level of training.

TCA Peel

Trichloroacetic Acid Peels, or TCA peels, are the most popular option for a medium-depth chemical peel. This is a non-toxic chemical that has been used in chemical peels for over two decades. When it’s applied, it makes the skin’s top layers dry up and slough off in 7–10 days following the treatment. It is highly effective in reducing pigmentation and wrinkles, smoothing skin that has “etched” lines or a leathery appearance caused by sun damage. TCA peels can be combined with Botox and dermal fillers for a more even-toned, smoother, and more youthful appearance. When combining TCA peels with additional treatments, the medium-depth chemical peel is applied first to smooth the skin, then Botox or dermal fillers are used to maintain the appearance. Combined with physician-grade skincare, your results will be enhanced and last longer. Future maintenance medium-depth chemical peels are recommended to sustain results.

Every chemical peel works by exfoliating away the sun-damaged top layers of skin. TCA peels at medium depth are usually recommended once or twice a year, and bear in mind that you’ll have about one week of downtime for any medium-depth chemical peel. The “peel” is obvious at this depth, and that’s how you know it’s working. You can use a TCA Peel to minimize age spots or brown spots, erase the signs of sun-damaged skin, reduce lines, improve acne scarring, and improve the laxity of skin while stimulating collagen production.

Jessner’s Peel

The Jessner’s peel is great for reducing unwanted pigment on the skin. It’s usually followed up by the application of retinoic acid, which helps the peel to penetrate deeper, thereby improving results. The acid gets to work breaking up the “glue” that holds together the keratinocytes (skin cells). When you combine retinoic acid with a medium-depth skin peel, you enjoy even better results and also helps with recovery and skin healing.

Complementary Treatments For Chemical Peels

Both chemical peels and microdermabrasion exfoliate the skin while removing the outer, dead layers of skin in a controlled environment. This allows for smoother, more youthful skin below the surface to be revealed. Microneedling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, helps to smooth wrinkles and lines by stimulating your body’s organic ability to produce collagen. At VIDA, our team of professional providers carefully listens to your concerns and goals to design the best skin care and anti-aging treatment plan just for you.

Broad Band Light (BBL) therapy is another great addition to a chemical peel. BBL uses pulses of light to break up hyperpigmentation in the skin, causing the body to safely and naturally eliminate it in the weeks following treatment. You’ll see the unwanted pigmentation darken before it flakes away. Combining chemical peels with BBL allows not only for younger-looking, more taut skin to come to the surface but also removes unwanted pigmentation.

What to Expect with Chemical Peels

Before your chemical peel appointment, you’ll find out if you’re a good candidate during your complimentary consultation. Chemical peels aren’t recommended for those nursing or pregnant, if you have certain types of skin conditions (active eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or dermatitis), have a compromised immune system, are planning to be in direct sunlight right after your treatment, are tan or have a recent sunburn, or if you’ve taken Accutane in the past 12–18 months.

During your appointment, your skin will be cleansed. If you opt for a pre-treatment, like microdermabrasion or dermaplaning, this will take place before the chemical peel. Next, your customized superficial chemical peel or medium-depth chemical peel is applied to the face, allowed to work its magic, then cleaned off thoroughly by your provider.

After your appointment, your skin may look shiny and feel tight. It’s critical to avoid direct sunlight after your treatments. Peeling usually starts 2–3 days after the treatment and can last for 5-7 days.  If you opted for a medium-depth peel, the peeling will be more aggressive, and you should plan for a week of downtime. Results for both types of peels will begin to show once the skin has shed.
