Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are widely used to minimize the appearance of facial folds and wrinkles, but they can also be used to re-contour facial features to give you a more rested, youthful appearance or to enhance your natural beauty. Collagen loss as we get older creates sagging, lax skin, and wrinkles. Dermal fillers can minimize smile folds and marionette lines, soften vertical lip lines, enhance lip fullness, turn up the corners of your mouth, create a smooth jawline, and even give you cheekbones that create the ideal heart-shaped face. The benefit to dermal fillers is that they often produce immediate results, with minimal to no downtime.

When dermal fillers were first used over 30 years ago, the goal was to fill in lines. At VIDA Aesthetic Medicine in Salem, we don’t just fill lines as that can lead to an unnatural or disproportioned look. We’ve all seen celebrities with huge lips that don’t fit their face or that look like they’ve had obvious work done. Our goal at VIDA is to enhance your natural beauty keeping in mind that most of us don’t want to change the way we look. We just want some little enhancements along the way that keep us looking good for our age without anyone knowing!

Lip Fillers

There are many types of dermal fillers, and some are designed just for the lips. If you want to increase the volume of your pout while ensuring natural-looking yet stunning results, the type of lip filler used is just as important as the skill of the injector. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, lip augmentations via lip fillers has increased 50 percent in the last five year, so if you want to join the perfect pout party, understanding which lip fillers are best is critical.

Versa re-“versas” the signs of aging lips

Versa Revanesse by Prolinium  is one of the newest hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers available. It promises more comfort during injection with minimal swelling—in fact, almost all patients treated with Versa reported zero or minimal swelling in one study. With minimal downtime and beautiful, natural-looking results, 100 percent of doctors who have used Versa in one study rated the results as either very improved, much improved, or improved even six months after injection (compared to just 76.4 percent when using other fillers). Try it yourself and see what the latest HA filler that’s just for lips can do for your pout.

Juvederm and Volbella

Juvederm is one of the premier makers of all types of dermal fillers. Their Volbella filler is exclusively for the lips. It’s FDA approved and restores (or creates) lip volume and can also be used to decrease fine laugh lines. Made with hyaluronic acid, which already occurs naturally in the body, it’s blended at various molecular weights for optimal results that last up to a year.

Restylane Family of Fillers

Restylane is a well-regarded Galderma product of dermal fillers, offering solutions that include products for various aesthetic needs. Alongside Restylane, we also provide Sculptra treatments, catering to a wide range of cosmetic enhancements. Restylane products are known for their effectiveness in delivering smoother, natural-looking results, while Sculptra is celebrated for its ability to promote collagen production, providing a gradual increase in skin thickness and a natural rejuvenation of the face.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do dermal fillers hurt?2020-02-06T04:50:19-08:00

Dermal fillers aren’t painful. The injection is sometimes described as mildly uncomfortable by some patients. VIDA offers topical numbing and is committed to optimizing patient safety and comfort, going above and beyond to ensure your dermal filler injection is as comfortable as possible. We also use cannula needles for a safer, more comfortable experience as well as to minimize bruising.

What are dermal fillers made of?2020-02-06T04:49:28-08:00

Most are created with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar we already have in our body.  Sculptra is made with poly-L-lactic acid (a synthetic material similar to absorbable sutures) and Radiesse, which is made of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel carrier of sterile water. Both Sculptra and Radiesse are collagen stimulators and are readily accepted by the body.

Is one dermal filler better than another?2020-02-06T04:53:27-08:00

No. Each filler is used for different areas and outcomes. VIDA walks every patient through the benefits of each type of dermal filler to determine the best fit for you, but there’s no “best” dermal filler for all.

What if I decide I don’t want dermal fillers after I get them?2020-02-06T04:51:54-08:00

In the rare instance that you no longer want your dermal filler, only the Hyaluronic acid fillers have methods that dissolve them as quickly and comfortably as it was to get them.

How long do dermal fillers last?2020-02-06T04:50:01-08:00

The longevity of each filler can vary based on the type of dermal filler, the amount injected, the area treated, and how your body reacts. Anywhere from 4 months to 24 months is normal, with the average being 10–12 months.

Will I get duck lips from dermal fillers?2020-02-06T04:50:54-08:00

The dreaded “duck lips” are a sign of an inexperienced or overzealous injector. When performed correctly, dermal fillers should look natural. You’ll never be at risk for duck lips or any other overdone look at VIDA. View our dermal filler gallery for actual patient results.

Are dermal fillers safe?2020-02-06T04:51:16-08:00

Hyaluronic acid (Juvederm, Versa, Restylane), Sculptra, and Radiesse have been shown to be safe in many studies and after years of regular use by clinics around the world.

How Dermal Fillers Work

Currently, injectors at VIDA are using one of the latest techniques in the field of aesthetic medicine. Known as “myomodulation,” fillers are placed beneath the muscle, where they can have a lifting effect on multiple other facial muscles. We also understand that fillers are not just about adding volume. No one wants a round or fat face. It’s important to preserve natural facial proportions so that nothing looks “overdone” or unnatural. VIDA’s injectors have specialized training and many years of experience using dermal fillers with great results!

The success with dermal fillers relies on choosing the right provider. One who is proficient and does this every day, not just every once in a while. After all, it is your face! At VIDA, your experience is important, and we make every attempt to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible. We understand that many patients are not fond of injections, and that’s why we offer pre-treatment numbing, gentle techniques, and the use of cannula needles to minimize discomfort, downtime, and bruising, as well as increased safety. It truly takes an artful eye, precision, and knowledge of each dermal filler and anatomy to give you a safe, long-lasting, and natural-looking results.

Some areas that can be treated (including off-label areas) are temples, undereye hollows, smile folds, lip lines, lips, cheeks and cheek hollows, jawline, chin, hands, neck, and acne scarring. At your complimentary consultation, your provider will conduct a thorough exam to determine the best filler for your anatomy, skin quality, treatment goals, and budget.

Dermal Fillers At VIDA

The dermal fillers we use include Juvederm (Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Volbella, Vollure, Voluma), Restylane (Lyft, Defyne, Refyne), Radiesse, Revanesse Versa, and Sculptra. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, and only Dr. Kim Thompson administers this dermal filler and has been doing so since 2006. The particular dermal filler we use will be based on your anatomy, skin quality, and treatment goals.

Different fillers have varying longevities and viscosities (thickness) that give what Dr. Thompson likes to call “oomph,” and improvements in skin appearance will differ based on the specific anatomy of each patient. With so many filler options available, a clinical evaluation is necessary before your treatment. Every treatment performed is specifically customized for you!

Dermal fillers can be used in almost any age group. Women in their 30s may want to enhance lips or cheekbones. Women in their 40s and 50s typically use fillers to combat signs of aging around their mouth, jowls, and cheeks. Women in their 60s usually opt for fillers to improve signs of volume loss in addition to lines and wrinkles. And women in their 70s or older, especially those who are not considering surgery or who have already had surgery, can still achieve a more youthful appearance with dermal fillers.

At VIDA, we will walk you through the entire process. Learning about your needs and working together provides a collaborative approach that ensures excellent results. We’ll make recommendations based on your goals. Contact VIDA today to schedule your complimentary consultation.
